What a weekend I had here in Almaty! Along with friends, I visited the monthly Crafts Fair that involved a number of various artisans. It was held at a downtown hotel, both outdoors and inside in the lobby. It was wonderful to see some traditional folk art of pottery, wall hangings, and leatherwork, as well as some examples of contemporary art.

Then, on Sunday a few of us took advantage of the nice weather and took the tram to a high-up area to view the city. Although the atmosphere was not as clear as we’d hoped, it was vry interesting to get an overview of the city. And the conversation over lunch was delightful!

As a quick preliminary note, I’m here in southeast Kazakhstan as a visiting prof at a university that has a linkage agreement with my home campus. In this series of blogs, I’d like to start reflecting on what I’m gradually learning during my stay here in Central Asia.
